GMA churchWithin smaller communities, church was often one of the most important structures within a community. The congregation was often small and scattered, so many times church became the place to see your neighbors and friends. This led to several events, like dinner on the grounds and all-day church. Churches in this time period did not usually have a full-time minister and were served by a circuit rider preacher. This preacher would travel throughout the area, teaching at a different church each Sunday. Many times the circuit rider would stay in a room like the traveler’s room at the Gibb’s House.
